A SPECIAL PIECE:

WORLD MUSEUM CONNECTIONS

Did you know...?

THE ASIAN CIVILISATION MUSEUM
(Singapore)

For the show, "Adventurers of the Sea" that ended last October, the Asian Civilisation Museum of Singapore lent exceptional artwork from the Tang shipwreck. In 1998, a shipwreck was discovered off Belitung Island in the Java Sea (Indonesia). It contained a remarkable cargo of more than 60,000 ceramics produced in China during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), as well as other luxurious objects of gold and silver. Bound for Iran and Iraq, the ship provided early proof of strong commercial links between China, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

Yet the Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm (Medelhavsmuseet) was indeed established in 1954 in order to house the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, founded in 1928, alongside a large collection of archaeological artefacts excavated by Swedish archaeologists during the 1920s at various sites on Cyprus and ancient Asine in Greece. It is faithfully supported by a large group of enthusiastic Friends of the Medelhavsmuseet who will greet you with open arms if ever you'd like to visit!
