GOLD
From April 25th to September 10th, 2018
A very special art piece has come from the Zadkine Museum in Paris.
In the 1920s, the Russian-born artist, Zadkine collaborated
with many interior designers. For example, Marc de Nicolas du
Plantier acquired several of Zadkine's works at the beginning of the
1930s which were placed in the apartments that he decorated. Amongst
these works was the Golden Bird, painted plaster with gold leaf
gilding, which today can be seen in the GOLD exhibition at the
Mucem.
Throughout the exhibition, discover a special creation by gethan&myles
The artist pair tells the story of the jewelry they bought from the Crédit Municipal de Marseille (Mont de Piété).
They set out to find the original owners of the jewelry, and when
they did, listened to and recorded their personal stories and
the importance that these objects had had in their family life. Then the
artists returned the jewelry to these original owners. The jewels
are displayed at the Mucem in an ephemeral installation that winds
through the entire Gold exhibition.

AI WEIWEI, FAN TAN
It's
a family connection that brought the celebrated Chinese artist to
Marseille, where he traced his father's footsteps of 1929. “My show
comes from a bit of nostalgia about my father," explains the
artist. In this show, Ai Weiwei unveils new commissions
alongside 50 works.
The artist and the Mucem share one common critical preoccupation: the observation of the everyday.

European Partners of the Mucem
The
Mucem is at the forefront of research on the role of ethnographic
museums in our changing European society. In this section, we would like
to show you the way two other European museums, partners of the Mucem
in the SWICH program, have worked on this theme.
THE MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY (Cambridge, UK)
The Museum
of Archaeology and Anthropology in Cambridge
houses important collections from the Pacific,
including one of the largest collections of objects from the
voyages of Captain James Cook. It also has the
largest collection of Fijian artefacts outside Fiji itself. Its
collections of world prehistory, particularly from the Paleolithic
period, are uniquely comprehensive. Many of the MAA's objects
center around the themes of birth, death, sex and feasting, such as the
Mexican Day of the Dead figures in the image above.

THE SWICH CONFERENCE July 11th to 13th in Cambridge
This conference builds on the five-year Creative Europe project, Sharing a World of Inclusion, Creativity and Heritage. SWICH
has connected museums of ethnography and world cultures across ten
European partner museums .They reflect current issues concerning the
role of ethnographic museums within an increasingly differentiated
European society. A network embracing museum curators and other staff,
researchers, artists, activists and community representatives has
reflected on what ethnographic museums do and can do, in increasingly
conflicted European societies.

THE WORLD FEDERATION OF FRIENDS OF MUSEUMS
From
May 10 to 13 in Madeira, The Friends of Mucem took part
in the General Assembly of the World Federation of Friends of
Museums (WFFM) with thirteen other countries, thanks to the outstanding
organization of the Portuguese Federation.
It was the right place to exchange information, views, and
experiences among Friends of museums. Notably, the Young Friends held
several fruitful workshops to trigger different ways of thinking about
the work they do in their associations and to promote Young Friends
around the world.
We very warmly welcomed the election of the new President,
Carolyn Forster from Australia, and the new executive committee for
three years, and we’ll actively support their efforts to share our
common values and to foster international cooperation among worldwide
associations for the benefit of museums and the public.
