JEAN DUBUFFET – A Barbarian in Europe

April 24th – September 2nd 2019

In the aftermath of the Second World War, this elusive and controversial artist brings into play a radical critique of the art and culture of his time. Borrowing from anthropology, folklore, and the field of psychiatry, he pursues the activity of decompartmentalization carried out by the avant-gardes of the inter-war period, blasts the belief in a supposedly primitive art, and opens up new pathways to creativity. One of the particularities of this exhibition is how it blends art with the Humanities.

WORLD MUSEUM CONNECTIONS

Exhibitions in Itinerancy
The Dubuffet exhibition will go on tour: after the Mucem in Marseille, it will go to the Institut Valencià d'Art Modern, and then to the Musée d'ethnographie de Genève. From Civilization to Modern Art to Ethnographie... this sums up Dubuffet's transdisciplinary character.

IVAM: Institut Valencià d’Art Moderne (Spain)

IVAM often does co-productions with other museums. They will host the Dubuffet exhibition from 8 October 2019 until 16 February 2020.

MEG: MUSEE D'ETHNOGRAPHIE DE GENEVE  (Suisse)

Dubuffet was also inspired by the ethnographic field, so it is of no surprise that this exhibition will soon be hosted at the Musée d'Ethnographie in Geneva, from 8 May 2020 until 3 January 2021. (And just like the Mucem, this museum, has a very active group of friends!)

TWO SUCCESSFUL WATERFRONT TALKS*
WITH JILL JARVIS AND BELMA BAS

JILL JARVIS, assistant professor in the Department of French at Yale University and specialist in the aesthetics and politics of North Africa, in residence at the Camargo Foundation, discussed her latest work on March 27th on the Sahara as a site of material, intellectual and linguistic exchanges. It was a rich and fascinating talk, inspiring much discussion.

BELMA BAS, a Turkish filmmaker based in Istanbul, presented her latest work to us on April 24th, while she is in in France in residence at the Camargo Foundation. She also showed us excerpts from her previous films. This rare and privileged moment allowed us a glimpse into the filmmaker's personal life and how it is portrayed in her work.
In the Roi René Tower on March 27th. Jill is seated far right.
In the Roi René Tower on April 24th. Belma is in the back in front of her computer.

* The International Circle is delighted to announce its latest new venture : a series of talks, aptly named the Waterfront Talks, which we are organizing in partnership with the Camargo Foundation, the Institute for Advanced Study of Marseille (IMéRA) and the Institute for American Universities. Our three partners each welcome scholars who work on their projects whilst resident here in Provence. The talks take place in the Roi René Tower and are open to International Circle members.
